Compare And Contrast Araby And A P Short Story - 999 Words

A coming of age story is when the protagonist experiences climatic event that leads them to adulthood. The event is usually tough but leads to a realization or epiphany. The short stories â€Å"AP† by John Updike and â€Å"Araby† by James Joyce both reflect coming of age stories. In the story AP, the narrator, Sammy quits his job to stand up for the three girls wearing â€Å"nothing but their bathing suits†() In the story Araby, the narrator shows himself growing up through discovering his sexuality. In the stories AP and Araby there are strong similarities in the plot and setting, however they are also different in the imagery and figurative language. The setting in â€Å"AP† takes place at a grocery store in the early 1960s in the summertime.†¦show more content†¦The settings in the two stories are similar in the way that they both take place in a small town with a sense of poverty. The adults are portrayed as authoritative and the narrators feel trapped. The plot in â€Å"AP† begins when the three girls who walk into the grocery store wearing their bathing suits. The conflict of the plot is the the girls who walked into the grocery store wearing nothing but their bathing suits. In this time period it was socially unacceptable for girls to walk around showing a lot of skin. The manager, Lengel confronted the girls for dressing inappropriately and because of this Sammy quits his job right after Lengle confronted the girls. Sammy removed his apron and bow tie and walked out of the store. When Sammy gets outside he expects the girls to be waiting for him but they are gone. The plot in â€Å"Araby† starts by the narrator telling the readers how he is obsessed with Mangan’s sister. He says â€Å"Every morning I lay on the floor in the front parlour watching her door. The blind was pulled down to within an inch of the sash so that I could not be seen. When she came out on the doorstep my heart leaped† (J oyce 331). Mangans sister tells the narrator about the Araby. She tells him that she wants to go but cannot. The narrator decides that he is going to go to the Araby to get his crush a gift. When he gets there most of the stalls are closed and he does not have enough money to buy her anything so he comes home with nothing. The Julius Rosenwald Fund tried to improve the health illnesses of African Americans by approaching representatives of the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS). Unfortunately, the Great Depression did not allow for this study to happen because it hit the Fund hard. Since there were no more funds, Dr. Taliaferro Clark, Chief of the USPHS Venereal Disease Division and author of the Rosenwald Study report, suggested that the treatment study could be partly saved by conducting a new study. Answer : Introduction The Queensland health department in Australia is often used as the best example of the biggest failure in the payroll system which used the most advanced Information System (IS) in the Southern Hemisphere. It was already running eighteen months behind the initial date and the budget also went for about three hundred percentage above than the expected budget that was planned for. The next problem that it faced when it was launched was the delay of the salary to many of the doctors and nurses and the worst part was that some were even not paid or paid incorrectly (Thite and Sandhu 2014). The total cost that it required for the maintenance and stability of the system was estimated to be approximately $1.25 billion AUD (Eden and Sedera 2014). For this reason, Queensland had to face many casualties like the industrial strike which lead to the resignation of the minister of health and some even left the job. The state of government also set up the highest judicial form of enquiry to invest igate what really caused the problem for which this has to face such a crisis (Glass 2013). They also provided a series of recommendations that need to be applied in the Information System projects in the near future. COBIT Framework COBIT or Control Objectives for Information and Related Technologies is a framework used for the development, implementing, monitoring and improving the information technology which helps in the governance and management practices. The main goal of this framework is to set a common language for the business executives to help them in communicating about the goals, objectives and results. It includes linking of the business goals with the IT infrastructure which provides series of maturity models and metrics that helps in measuring the achievement and also helps in identifying the business responsibilities which includes Planning and Organization, Delivering and Support, Acquiring and Implementation and monitoring and evaluation (De Haes, Van Grembergen and Debreceny 2013). There are various other frameworks that work collectively like ITIIL, CMMI, COSO and many more to name. COBIT basically holds each of the frameworks within itself. There are various components of the COBIT makes th e framework more easy to use like it often helps the IT companies to organize the data so to bring the best practices in IT industry as well as meeting the business requirements (Haes and Grembergen 2015). It is also used as the reference model and sets up a common language for every individual in the organization which could have been very much useful for Queensland health department so that they could have communicated within themselves the problem they are facing there (Glass 2013). It helps in planning, building, running and monitoring the process related to information technology. It also helps in viewing the complete list of requirements which has been chosen by the management that can be used for the effective IT business control. It also helps in measuring the performances and also helps in illustrating better inter-relationship with different processes. COBIT is being used by the Queensland health department to fulfill the business processes and related technologies and is useful for every organization including this that is fully independent on technologies (Eden and Sedera 2014). It is generally used by government, federal and other private institutions which in turn help in increasing the IT processes to a great extent (Haes and Grembergen 2015). COSO Framework COSO was originally developed for the purpose of evaluation and internal controls. The model is widely accepted framework and is recognized as the standard which is used to measure the effectiveness of the systems for the internal control (Martin, Sanders and Scalan 2014). It can be defined as the process which gets affected by the board of directors, management and other personnel who are meant to complete the achievements for different cases like bringing up the effectiveness and efficiency of operations, financial reporting reliability and also following the rules and regulations (Malkin and Pearson 2014). In COSO, there are five major components which are in play like the Control Environment, Risk Assessment, Control Activities, Monitoring and Information and Communication. In the case of Control Environment, various factors come into play like Integrity and Ethical Values, Commitment to Competence, Organizational Structure and Human resource policies and procedures. For the Risk Assessment, Company-wide and Process-level objectives, Risk identification and Analysis and also manages the changes that is happening. The third is the Control Activities which look into Policies and Procedures, Security, Application and Outsourcing (Duffield and Whitty 2015). The fourth is the Information and Communication which looks into the quality of information and also helps in effectiveness of communication. The last one is the Monitoring which manages the ongoing processes and evaluate the separate processes that is going on. Also it reports the deficiencies which are present in the system. These components work together collectively for the foundation of internal control through directed leadership, shared values and also works for the accountability for control. It also assesses the various problems that the company faces on a routine basis within all the functions in the organizations (Haes and Grembergen 2015). These are designed in such a way so that they can help in minimize the risks involved in it. It also helps in identifying the risks and the objectives are discussed among the managers in all the levels. The biggest advantage of using COSO is that it is monitored and addressed continuously in a timely manner (Malkin and Pearson 2014). Health Department of Queensland The health department of Queensland should have used the COSO for different purposes. Firstly, COSO enables them to understand the risk involved in the project also helps them to meet the desired requirements of the business. The second is that it helps the organization to monitor the different processes that are talking place and evaluate them accordingly (Ainsworth 2013). With the help of COSO, they are able communicate with the managers at different levels and solve their problems (Martin, Sanders and Scalan 2014). It also keeps a check on the integrity and Ethical values also the human resources look at the different policies and security. It also checks the risk that is included in the project which can help them identify it and also helps in rectifying. IBM COBIT and COSO were very much useful which could have been used to find the flaws in the Queensland Health Payroll system which was reviewed by IBM (De Haes, Van Grembergen and Debreceny 2013). Use of these frameworks made the work of IBM quite easy to find the flaws that were the main reason behind the failure of the payroll system for which many employees had to face the problems and for which many were forced to leave (Jarman 2013). With the help of these frameworks, IBM easily understood the problem that what went wrong with the Information Technology and what preventive measures that forgot to take (Ainsworth 2013). Also, this helped them assessing the communication problem in each level and monitors the problems that were present to evaluate individually (Wilkin et al. 2015). Contractors or Parties Other parties used these frameworks to find what the health department was lacking in and what could they have done in order to save that mishap from happening. Using the COBIT framework proper Planning and Organization, Delivering and Support, Acquiring and Implementation and monitoring and evaluation could have been managed so that they do not go over budget (De Haes, Van Grembergen and Debreceny 2013). A toolkit is present in this framework which is used for the regulatory services also with SOX. Also with the help of COSO framework, they could have monitored and evaluated the existing problems like the communication in each level also with the help of this framework; they can assess various problems that the organization was facing that time (Ainsworth 2013). Planning the first phase Queensland Payroll system should have used the development cycle in order to find any flaws present. Different plans were implemented for the successful development of the project. Payroll system is a very important and very complex thing which needs to accesses carefully in order to work properly (Hmelak 2014). The problem with the payroll system was that it involved thousands of employees which automatically increase the complexity of the system. It required a huge amount of time and proper planning before setting this thing up (Duffield and Whitty 2015). For this sole reason, it is very important that proper planning should be planned and implemented accordingly so that later it may not have to face any sort of problems. There were mainly three areas where the organization needs to keep their focus on constantly so that they are able to identify and rectify the problems that the organization might face during the installation of the information technology. The first one that the o rganization should consider about is the Processes of the payroll system as it includes a whole lot of people. The process was complex from beforehand only as the system had to keep track of different things like the login times for each employee, employees who are in leaves or vacation also it had to keep track of the commissionable sales (Brown 2014). Even it had to keep track of the bonuses that were given to the employees which made it even more complex. Another thing that it needs to keep track records of is the ones who left the job or terminated. These things are very important for any organization and Queensland should have taken this into account before setting up the information technology and should have assessed the risks involved in setting this up so that they may not face any difficulty in the near future (Degese 2015). Above all these, there was another burning issue that is the security concern which also should be taken into account (Brown 2014). Different systems have different payroll services. The salaried employees might not to give their login details on a daily basis but the ones who are hourly employees needs to give their login details daily so that the system can keep a track of them. The part time employees need different payroll methods as they are totally different from the regular ones and the ones who are doing their shift on an hourly basis (Thite and Sandhu 2014). Planning of the different levels of employees along with their payment system was established. Analysis of the Second Phase There were many factors that needed to be analyzed before setting up the Information Technology. The first is the payroll system which needed to be analyzed carefully because of its nature of complexity. Payroll services works different for different sectors of an organization so it needed to be reviewed more carefully than any other (Degese 2015). It was a computerized payroll so the first thing that needed to be analyzed was the size of the business and how the payroll services will work in this environment which needed to assessed by the team of specialists before it went online (Brown 2014). As the payroll services works differently, they needed more time in evaluating the consequences and also the problems that can occur because of this. It also needed to assess the total cost and should have made a proper planning before moving further. The requirements were also need to be analyzed so that it did not lack anything when the system was finally installed and goes live (Schefe and Timbrell 2013). It would also help in keeping the cost under control and helps the cost to be in line rather than going over budget. The total number of hourly, part time and salaried employees should also be taken and should be managed carefully by the system. The organization should take care of the ups and downs of the economy so that the employees can get their salaries within time. Lastly, the terms and conditions should be defined carefully so that there lays no confusion among the employers (Tursunbayeva et al. 2016). Conclusion The Queensland health payroll system was thought to have the best information technology but due to lack of proper planning and evaluation, launch of the system was delayed and when it finally launched, there were many issues regarding the salaries of the employees like irregular salary or worst they are not getting their salaries also this resulted in the over budget. If they had used the COBIT or COSO framework within their system, then they could have easily understood the problems that they are having and also they can know where the problem lies and can easily cope up with that. Also using this framework could help them understand all the problems and help them analyze it properly and with proper planning, they can get to the root of the problem and solve it. Therefore, before setting up any Information Technology, it is very much important for the organization to understand the upcoming problems and should make a contingency plan accordingly. The end consumer is in direct communication only with Company A. Company A, on the other hand has an exclusive partnership with Company B. Likewise, Company B has an exclusive partnership with Company C. The same setup is true for Company D and E. The real demand is what the end consumer requires from Company A. The existing arrangement complicates an otherwise simple business transaction between what is supposed to be a deal between Company A and the end customer. Should there be periods where demand falls, there is the certainty of an increase in non-value added buffer stocks. The evident absence of communication between the customer and third-party suppliers may result in unreliable deliveries. In attempts to bridge delays in delivery, the customer will tend to order in advance which may result in over-ordering if there is poor capacity planning and delivery schedules are not managed efficiently. The existing setup makes for a rather inefficient supply chain, which is susceptible to miscommunication, error, delays and losses. (Lee, Padmanabhan and Whang 2004) 1(b). Several solutions can be implemented to reduce the impact of the bullwhip effect. For the existing setup to be more efficient, companies should explore means of integrating several stages in the supply chain. Companies should examine their procedures to determine if there are processes that can be integrated or eliminated. This will result in savings, which will later translate into an increased earning capacity. An improvement of relationships in the supply chain leads to better communication between entities and makes for faster and more efficient transactions. Supply chains with similar setups will greatly benefit from ERP systems or Enterprise Resource Planning Systems. All the data and the processes of an organization will be integrated into one central system with the ERPs. Therefore, utilizing ERPs is a more time-efficient method of managing transactions. (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 2007) EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) or e-procurement implements processes that would automate transactions such as ordering. Like ERP systems, the use of EDI improves the speed of processing transactions and leads to more accurate busienss information. Real time information is the result of the proper use of tools such as ERPs and EDI. Managing transactions using real time information means that the information used is fresh, updated and will lead to better results for the whole organization. Transparency in all components the supply chain will lead to better communication between members of the chain and is essential in efficiently addressing the needs that will make for smooth operations. (Brunke n.d.) 2(a) Organizations use certain criteria to evaluate the performance of a logistics supply chain. Processes that organizations may be spending too much on will be revealed by a thorough analysis of costs by activity. A review of activity costs will help managers determine where to cut costs within an organization. (Brunke n.d.) Customer satisfaction is always good measure of the success of a company. Organizations can use valuable feedback information to determine their strengths and weaknesses. Proper attention to and evaluation of issues that customers will raise is a good way of determining what areas to improve on in terms of service levels. (Brunke n.d.) Two areas that would eat up a significant amount of companies budgets are warehousing and transportation costs. In order to deliver quality products to customer, companies must be careful of how they store and transport their products from the warehouses to the stores. In line with this, they must come up with an efficient routing system that would ensure that products will come to their customers on time at the best quality. For example, grocery store chain that has two branches that are near each other dont need individual warehouses for their inventory. In order to save on costs, the grocery chain should have one warehouse that is located near both stores to keep inventory for both. Delivery routes should be well-planned such that inventory for restocking both stores can be accommodated using one delivery truck. This will help the company save on storage expense as well as fuel expenses. (Brunke n.d.) Storage and transportation are essential activities in a supply chain. A well-defined warehousing and transportation system will lead to reduced logistics support costs. It is wise to measure supplier performance to ensure that products are always at top quality. Suppliers should be subject to inspections and evaluations from time to time to guarantee that raw materials or services availed from them are at a par to the companys standards. 2 (b) All business organizations are not without their fair share of obstacles. In developing a Logistics Information System or L.I.S. there are several common problems that organizations should look out for. The first problem is inaccurate data. Pip was badly educated as a child, although he could read he did not always comprehend what had been written.   Also Georgiana, wife of the above Pip thinks that his mother is called also Georgiana because this is what is written on her grave. Pip finds it difficult to learn and claims he struggled through the alphabet as if it were a bramble bush. This quote also shows that Pip has only had very basic education. My first fancies regarding what they were like, were unreasonably derived from their tombstones. The shape of the letters on my fathers grave gave me an odd idea that he was a square, stout, dark man, with curly black hair.   This shows just how childish Pip is in making decisions and conclusions on such very simple and broad evidence. Joe encourages Pips education by his desire to make him his apprentice. Apprenticeships in this era were very different to the modern apprenticeship. The master of the apprentice had full control over his scholar and often imposed harsh rules upon him and punished him severely for any bad habits or behaviour. The apprenticeship was very much similar to a prison sentence and involved long hard hours of labour. However in this story Pip and Joe are good friends. I always treated him as a larger species of child, and as no more than my equal.   A blacksmith would be a very skilled trade in a village in the Victorian era and would be a good craft to learn for Pip.  Mrs Joe does not encourage Pips education as she sees it as a source of inquisitiveness, which irritates her. Most adults had very little respect for children in the Victorian era. Here the sergeant asked everybody if they had seen the convicts. Everybody, myself expected, said no, with confidence. Nobody thought of me   Children had none of the ready made entertainment we have today and far fewer toys. Working class families could not afford toys, so the children made up their own games out of everyday objects, and invented songs and rhymes, Upper-class children played cards, and basic board games.  Let me see you play cards with this boy Miss Havisham. As Estella is an upper-class rich child, she can afford cards to play with. I have found out many interesting facts whilst exploring Victorian childhood both through my own research and by reading about the characters in Dickens book Great Expectations. Compared with today, there has clearly been dramatic changes during the past 200 years in many areas including; home life, education, health and work. Although the characters in this book do not show a necessarily typical portrayal of Victorian childhood as both children were reasonably well brought up compared to many other children of this time, you can clearly see the differences with the modern day and how fortunate we really are.

I on the other hand am gifted with both of these powers and use them every day Invisibility and the ability to fly arent just useful in everyday life they are just plain fun. I recieved my powers out of nowhere.One day I was sitting on the couch watching Television, and I fell asleep. I had a weird dream that I had the aability to fly and could become invisible. Well strangely enough when I woke up I was floating in mid air! It took some struggling to get back on my feet because I did not exactly know how to, but when I finally did I went to the bathroom to look in the mirror and see if I could become invisible. In my dream if I concentrated hard enough I could become invisible, well sure enough I became invisible.This was a long time ago and I have just about got both of my powers under my control now. Being able to fly is, needless to say, is very useful. Such as after school when everybody is waiting in the thirty minute line to go home I just fly off home laughing at everyone wasting their gas. It definitely saves me money on gas, and I know I will not wreck because their is no one else who can fly. Also since I am gifted with powers I enjoy helping people out when they are in trouble. It is also a whole lot of fun doing tricks in the sky. Being invisible has a lot of advantages. It first of all helps me out when I am flying so nobody can see me. Also instead of wearing a dumb outfit so nobody knows who I am when I am helping people. The best part of being invisible though would probably not be helping people it would be messing with people and pulling pranks on them because they have no clue who it is. It also helps if you do not like to study so you can sneek into the teachers classroom and get the answers to the quiz or test. Super powers are alot of fun, but also a big responsibility. They help out in life and make everyday things like traveling fun and exciting. Its also really rewarding to help people out when they are in trouble. I do not know how I got my powers, I do not know how long I will have them. I do know one thing though I will be enjoying them.

Realism in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman Realism may be defined as an attempt to reproduce the surface appearance of the life of normal people in everyday situations (Kennedy 1410). Basically realism is a situation that normal people can relate to based on their own experiences. Realism is extremely prevalent in the play Death of a Salesman. The characters in the play have real world problems. Lack of money is one of the problems, which is a problem for many people. There are also many conflicts within the family; related to each characters definition of success.   Ã‚   Willy Loman also wants his children to have a better than he has and tries to do everything he can so they will have a better life, including ending his own. One realistic situation that many people can relate to is money problems. Money is one of the main problems that Willy Loman had throughout the play. The Loman family had many purchases on payments. Linda even states â€Å"for the vacuum cleaner there’s three and a half due on the fifteenth† (Miller 1650). The Loman family was living from week to week. Every time Willy came home from a fairly successful day selling, he would think he was finally getting ahead. Willy would tell Linda how much he had made, but she would then point out how much they owed on everything. Willy then felt overwhelmed and said â€Å"My God, if business don’t pick up I don’t know what I’m gonna do!† (1650). Linda would then reassure Willy and tell him â€Å"Well, next week you’ll do better† (1650). Many people in real life have this same problem. Every time they feel they are getting ahead financially, a problem occurs and they find themselves right back where they started. Most people also have to deal with problems and conflicts within their family throughout their life. Family problems were not exempt from the characters in Death of a Salesman. Biff’s idea of success was completely opposite from Willy’s. Willy viewed success as achieving money and power; Biff however viewed success in life as being happy. Biff realized that â€Å"I’m just what I am, that’s all† (1703). Biff realized he was â€Å"a dime a dozen† (1703), but his father could not accept this reality. This situation where parents always keep telling their children what they should do with their lives is common in many families.

It is a transformation in the hearts and minds of followers so that they move higher level of understanding, commitment, and performance. The two authors asserted that followers perform beyond expectations when that transformation takes place. Hearts and minds imply that the transformation is in the emotional response and the cognitive response that follower’s experience. They feel better about things and they think more constructively as a result of the leadership that they have experienced. Not only is influence being achieved, but the emotions are positive. (p. 8) On a similar note, Smircich and Morgan (1982) in Parry’s â€Å"The Thing about Metaphors and Leadership† (2008) asserted that the essence of leadership is management of meaning. The bottom line of what people do in their leadership roles is to manage the meaning that they make of events. When leaders and followers make sense of events, and of their role within those events, then they are better able to play their part in events. Leaders are able to influence followers in the ways that the leaders intended. (p. 8) Parry’s (1999) in Parry’s â€Å"The Thing about Metaphors and Leadership† (2008) gave an example of leadership that was demonstrated within local government mergers, he found that the essence of leadership was enhancing the adaptability of leaders and followers to the uncertainty and turbulence of change. When leaders are more adaptable, they can lead better. When followers can adapt to change, they can follow better. Once again, influence is achieved. Moreover, the emotions are positive because followers can see some personal benefit from the positive changes that are achieved, rather than feeling apprehension or remorse as a result of personal risk. (p. 9) On a different note, Weick (1995) and Pye (2005) in Parry’s â€Å"The Thing about Metaphors and Leadership† (2008) argue that the essence of leadership lies in sense-making. People in leadership roles make sense of the situation they are faced with. In turn, they help convey that sense to followers. A leader makes sense of the confusion and ambiguity and conveys that sense to followers. In turn followers make sense of their challenges and expectations, which enables them to achieve the outcomes that are desired. Parry contends that this idea of â€Å"sense-making† is perhaps the best metaphor for leadership. (p. 9) How Jesus Christ is the Perfect Model of Servant Leadership In the world today there are many types of leaders, from military to the business world to community organizations to government institutions. Whereas, some leaders assume leadership positions without undergoing training, others, like is the case in the military undergoes a rigorous training procedure that equips them with the necessary knowledge and skills to lead. However, no matter the training one has to undergo in order to qualify to be a leader, s/he may not exemplify the true servant leadership that Jesus Christ exemplified and preached about. One of the greatest leaders in human history learned this when he was given the task of leading God’s chosen people out of the wilderness and into the Promised Land. According to Dr. John J. Javis, a professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at the Grace Theological Seminary, â€Å"when Joshua and the children of Israel were faithful to God’s Word and His will, there was victory. When they abandoned His will in favor of their own genius, there was failure and frustration. † [Davis, 1969] Failure and frustration is a direct result of the inability to learn to follow before you can learn to lead. Under Moses’ leadership, Joshua learned this very well. Leadership is influence, so the accepted definition goes. Influence is the ability to move another person in a direction you believe is important. By any definition, Jesus Christ was a leader like any other. He influenced many and his follower-ship continues to influence many including the author of this paper whose follower-ship has resulted into many professional victories in his military career, a phenomenon that has led to his leadership. It is awesome how He prepares our hearts in one season to equip us for future roles and responsibilities. It is unbelievable how the follower-ship of His leadership continue to propagate His teachings that in turn continue to enhance his leadership many years after his physical departure from the earth, indeed his was and continue to be a true servant leadership that we should emulate. Greenwood et al (2008) in their research findings asserts that â€Å"Leaders’ must understand the different needs of each generation and the needs of the different generations in countries in which they are conducting business if they are to lead successfully. Managers in their leadership capacity should also create human resources policies to ensure that work teams include the perspectives of these different generational value systems. Yet, leaders must meet the challenge of managing each generation differently in order to achieve high performance outcomes. By examining each generation’s value structure, one can develop a profile of each group which can guide how each is managed. † (p. 69) Looking back at Jesus’ Ministry one is inclined to conclude that He (Jesus Christ) was the greatest leader of all times, the world has and will ever know because he combined the leadership and follower-ship virtues to the successfully weave His Ministry among all the generations. He clearly demonstrated perfect leadership while fully submitted to His father’s will – what a blessing to have a Savior who took on flesh and walked this earth, a great High Priest who is familiar with our sufferings†¦ an effective leader. Dr. Ken Collier, a Christian Camp Counselor says it this way, â€Å"Jesus Christ had a sharply focused view of exactly what His Father desired of him. No trial no deprivation, no conflict, no misunderstanding, and no death threat made Him swerve from following the will of his father. What a leader, what a follower! †[Collier, 2004] Dr. John McArthur appropriately asks a few questions in, The Book of Leadership: â€Å"First, what makes a good leader? Is it rank, status, celebrity, clout, or even style? Is leadership automatically bestowed by a box on the organizational chart? Where do position and power figure into the formula for leadership? And what is the ideal model for leaders? Is it the corporate chief executive officer? Or the military commander? Or even the head of state? † [MacArthur, 2004] Jesus Christ answers all these questions in a few words. His views on leadership are conspicuously out of step with the conventional wisdom of our age. Jesus Christ said, â€Å"You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great, exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great (the leader) among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be among you, let him be your slave (Matthew 20:25-28 NKJV). † Going by this principle, one will not fail to truly be convinced, that the truest form of leadership demands service, sacrifice, and selflessness. A proud a self-promoting person is not a good leader by Jesus’ standards, regardless of how much clout s/he might wield. Leaders who look to Jesus Christ as their leader and their supreme model of leadership will have servants’ hearts. They will exemplify sacrifice and follower-ship. Burns (1978) summed up what is expected of a leader, that; â€Å"it is beyond just accomplishment of shared objectives to include followers values and motivations: as leaders inducing followers to act for certain goals that represent the values and the motivation – the wants and the needs, the aspirations and expectations – of both leaders and followers. And the genius of leadership lies in the manner in which leaders see and act on their own and their followers’ values and motivations. † (p. 19) A leader must learn, practice, and master follower-ship in order to ever gain a position of leadership – Joshua learned, practiced, and mastered Moses’ concepts of leadership and as a result he successfully led the Canaanites. Dr. James Montgomery Boice, senior pastor of Tenth Presbyterian Church, president and cofounder of â€Å"The Bible Study Hour†, comments this way: â€Å"Nearly everyone wants to be prosperous as a result of their leadership, yet most fail. What is the problem? The problem is that we do not follow the divine formula for success. † [Boice, 1969] Depree (1989) defines a true servant leadership this way; â€Å"The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between the two, the leader must become a servant and a debtor. That sums up the progress of the artful leader. † (p. 11) That is what we so badly need today in a leader: not increasingly clever methods, still less increasingly clever people, but obedience informed and motivated by living and abiding example of Jesus Christ. To be a leader does not necessarily require an appointment or election. God chooses leaders; He equips them with the true leadership skills and knowledge so that they may help others become good leaders and followers. If one is endowed with the true leaderships skills, then it is his/ her responsibility to help others, an example of such situation is exemplified by Mr. Alber Survovik, a Christian business man, Caldwell ISD School Board Trustee, Burleson County, and Texas Appraisal District Board Director. His is a case of true leadership endowed by God, he assets that, â€Å"Professionally I am an Automation Systems Analysis at APC, a LocalAdLink representative and a rancher. My family loves getting away to our West Texas Hill Country Hunting and Camping Ranch. I enjoy meeting new people and helping others. One might say that I have a servant’s heart. † [Surovik, 2009] It should be noted that leadership is essential. Without leadership in any organization, it flounders and staggers on a haphazard course. Without leadership, an organization is unable to fulfill its core purposes. Simply, the idea of someone leading others is rooted in the Scriptures. For someone to assume the role of the leader and to expect others to follow his or her example is not egotistical, authoritarian, condescending, or sinful. We are assured of this because the Scriptures lay down the basis and guidelines for leadership. [MacArthur, 2005] The author of this paper is a United States Navy Flag Writer, who as expected swore to protect the constitution of the United States, and to follow the orders of those appointed over him. As a Navy flag Writer, the person appointed over him are always admirals. Admirals are men and women who make serious decisions in support of national security, thereby defined as leaders. The choice of this particular career was fundamental as it directly enables him to serve Jesus Christ by serving â€Å"those appointed over him†, as well as those who serve under him. By following the orders of the Admiral, he then can lead those who serve him. He does this by applying the principles discussed in this paper. He constantly remind himself whenever he is faced with making a tough leadership decision, that first, he is a follower – not just of a Navy Admiral, but of Jesus Christ. He reminds himself that although Jesus is the Christ, and that He epitomizes leadership, He did remove his outer garments and wash the feet of those he led. This does not imply that the author cordons washing someone’s feet per se, but the application and example still stands – for one to be a leader, s/he must be a follower. This is what is defined as servant leadership, and it has its place throughout the military, the business world, and our society as a whole. In conclusion, it is vital to a servant reader that he or she be endowed by a meek and quiet spirit. Meekness and quietness are like a precarious gem to a leader. The 17th century puritan, and personal hero to the author of this paper, Mathew Henry describes this so eloquently: [Henry, 1996] â€Å"Quietness is the evenness, the composure, and the rest of the soul, which speaks both the nature and the excellence of the grace of meekness. The greatest comfort and happiness of man is sometimes set forth by quietness. That peace of conscience which Christ has left for a legacy to His followers, that present sabbatism of the soul, which is an earnest of the rest that remains for the people of god, is called ‘quietness and assurance forever,’ and is promised as ‘the effect of righteousness’ (Isaiah 32: 17), and it follows, ‘My peace shall dwell in quiet resting places. ’ So graciously has God been pleased to entwine interest with us, as to enjoin the same thing under the notion of a duty which He proposes and promises under the notion of a privilege. Gathering Research Data-Police Officers and Job Hazards Essay

What is the goal or purpose behind your proposed research? The purpose of this study is to identify the degree to which quality of performance by police officers is affected by actual hazards in the execution of their jobs. What type of interview structure would you use? Why? The interview will be structured to answer the two main questions; what hazards police officers are faced with? How does it determine the way an order is executed? Obviously, the interviewing questionnaire would consist of three parts. The first section will ask basic biographical questions pertaining to gender, length of time in the service among other items relevant to the study. Sections two and three would embody responses pertaining to the research hypothesis. It would be so designed to offer scope for comparative an analysis between the variables quality of performance on the jobs and hazards affecting execution of duties. It is important for it to be structured in this way to excluded biases in the study. As such the research would create a balance. This is expected to expose transparency and validity. What would be some questions you would ask? Why? Biographical data— Age, sex, marital status, length of service, educational back ground and rank. Questions pertaining to work performance— The likert scale could be used here to solicit responses. From a scale 1-5 five being the highest, rate the extent to which you love your job; what tasks you like performing best? (A list of duties will be offered to be circled); what are do you feel you perform best? A list of tasks will be offered as a selection) Questions pertaining to hazards—A likert scale could be adopted for the first responses. Rate using the scale 1-5 five being the highest; how likely are you to proceed with the order of arresting a harmed criminal? How would you react if instructed to conduct a investigation in a know drug infested community (a list of options will be designed for selection). What is your perception of hazards in the execution of you duties? This would be an opened ended question without a structured response. These are the questions which would most likely offer the basis for a comparative analysis of the research. What are some distinct advantages of a qualitative data-gathering strategy, such as participant observation, over more quantitative approaches? It is a mater of subjectivity as against objectivity. Respondents during a quantitative research believe that they are expected to behave in a particular way so they act it. This violates internal validity. In a qualitative analysis the sampled populations do not know that they are being researched. Therefore there is no compromised behavior. Hence the criteria of validity can be precisely evaluated. The only subjectivity to the research are those influenced by the researchers’ paradigms. When conducting survey research, how important is informed consent and confidentiality? From the perspective of both the police as a public offer and the police as a researcher the question of informed consent and confidentiality borders on professional ethics; be it a professional researcher or police officer. It is therefore pertinent that legal rights to privacy be maintained at every level of institutionalized practice. The real importance lies in the fact that the legislated right to privacy must be adhered to. It spreads across vey discipline. Information derived from studies such as these are used to redesign public policy. As such the participants must give written or verbal consent for the information to be used for what it was intended. It must also be confirmed that information would not be shared to jeopardize their future.

Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452 in the small town of Vinci, near Florence. He was the son of a wealthy Florentine notary and a peasant woman. In 1460 the family moved to Florence, where Leonardo was given the best education. At the age of nineteen he traveled to Florence to be an apprentice in the studio of Verrocchio.While he was there he began his painting career.His most famous pieces of works are The Last Supper, Madonna and Child with St. Anne, Mona Lisa, and Self-Portrait.DaVinci also painted the Battle of Anghiari, the Leda.These two pieces of work are not very famous, but they are the most important. About 1466 he was apprenticed as a studio boy to Andrea Del Verrocchio, the leading Florentine painter and sculptor of his day. In Verrocchios workshop Leonardo was introduced to many activities, from the painting of altarpieces and panel pictures to the creation of large sculptural projects in marble and bronze. In 1472 he was entered in the painters guild of Florence, and in 1476 he was still considered Verrocchios assistant. In Verrocchios Baptism of Christ the kneeling angel at the left of the painting was done by Leonardo. After this part of his life Leonardo moved to Milan where he began working for the duke of Milan. He got this position by writing a letter to the duke stating he could build many things that could be useful to him.During his stay at Milan Leonardo accomplished many thing that would further make him what he has become today which is a great and famous artist. He made one of his famous paintings called the virgin of the rocks which was painted in approximately 1 843. His stay at Milan he produced many painting and many were lost he also made other things such as architectural drawings and models. Around 1500 Leonardo went back to Florence and went to work for the duke of Romagna as the chief architect and engineer. With this position Leonardo joined a group who were to decide on a proper location for the marble statue of David. Although Leonardo produced a small number of paintings, many of which where unfinished, he was still an extraordinary artist. During his early years, his style was closely compared to Verrocchio, but he gradually moved away from his teachers style and began growing on his own expanding the talent he had. Sculpting was a pastime that DaVinci cherished.His two great sculptures are the giant equestrian statue of Francesco Sforza and the monument for Marshal Trivulzio.Both of these sculptors were not finished. Throughout his life he invented many objects.DaVinci did not build many of the things he drew.He compiled all of his drawings in the Codex Madrid.Many people discovered his drawings and created replicas of his works. Leonardo taught and created music. You Can Be and Introvert and a Leader – Here are 7 Tips 7 Leadership Tips for Introverted People Being a leader and an introvert may sound impossible. After all, leaders have to be gregarious, outgoing, outspoken and inspirational to others. How can anyone do these things if all they want is to be alone to think and reflect. It’s true. Introverts do spend more time thinking than most others. And when they do this, others think of them as cold or unfeeling or, worse, as having some type of â€Å"superiority complex.† And when they are placed in leadership positions, others wonder how that will ever â€Å"work.† You may be wondering how that will ever â€Å"work† too, if you are that introvert. When engaged in resume writing to find your job, you probably did not put â€Å"introvert† down as one of your personal qualities. And now here you are, expected to be a leader. But you know some things about yourself that others don’t. You know that you genuinely enjoy people, but in small doses – both in numbers and in time. As an introvert, you become â€Å"depleted† more rapidly than others and have to â€Å"refuel† yourself by getting back to a private place where you can be alone with your thoughts, even though those thoughts may be related to work. So, you close your office door to re-group. And others label you unfriendly or â€Å"stuck-up.† You Can Be a Successful Leader The operative word here is â€Å"compensation† (along with a good dose of honesty). You do have to develop ways to compensate for your need to be quite and alone. Here are 7 tips that will help. Be Honest with Your Team: There is nothing wrong with telling your team members that you are an introvert and explaining your need to retreat and reflect. When you are up front about it, they will understand your behaviors and not judge you negatively. Then you can say, â€Å"Give me a little while to think about this,† and it won’t b mis-interpreted. Use LBWA: This means â€Å"Leadership by Walking Around,† and is considered to be quite effective in establishing relationships with your team. If you spend some time one-on-one with each team member as you walk around, you will not feel stressed by numbers. And those individuals will come to believe that you do have interest in them and their work. Keep Meetings Short: It is better to have shorter meetings more often than to have long ones that drain you. Prepare a short agenda and stick to it. Your team members will probably appreciate that anyway. Get an Extrovert Back-up: If you have to attend a large gathering that is work-related, you can’t avoid it, obviously. But if you have an extroverted buddy by your side, s/he can help carry conversations and you can just smile and nod your head. Housekeeping Items by Email: There are lots of minor items that you may need to handle with your team – new procedures from top-level executives, new reporting deadlines, etc. You don’t have to spend meeting time on these. Emails will work, and your emails can be friendly and conversational in nature. And adding a joke at the end is a good way to further relationships. Use Facebook as a Relationship Builder: Have a Facebook account and keep your posts light and fun. Co-workers and team members are probably on Facebook too, and they will â€Å"feel† that they know you better. Build Recovery Time into Your Schedule: You can’t be a good leader if you are drained. Give yourself short periods of time during the day – very short – just to get quiet and alone. It does help. But set a limit on that â€Å"down time† so you don’t fall back into bad habits of pre-leadership days. You can take the lead and be very successful. Know your limits, be honest with others, and use these compensation techniques.

The common aviation area of Europe was decided, which allowed the carriers to operate in European Union. These reforms had considerable impact in the air cargo industry by open up skies, providing them additional trading and access opportunities.
